The use of artificial intelligence within game development has been a huge point of contention, especially within the AAA space. It’s recently surfaced that EA is using AI-generated voices for its in-game commentators for NHL 27.
Sports commentator John Buccigross revealed during a discussion with Chirpping Zebas (spotted by Mike Straw) that EA’s “using some AI stuff.”
The commentator has heard some of the generated stuff and notes that it’s good, but also says AI will “get something wrong.”
“They’re using some AI stuff now. They played me some stuff back on my voice. It’s like, well that’s pretty good…but sometimes AI will get something wrong.”
At this time, EA hasn’t totally said how it plans to use AI in NHL 27 — or rather if it extends beyond the voice over — but we doubt that it will just remain a VO thing and will likely hear more about it when the game launches on September 11 to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
